Devina – the creative mind behind miauwww.com
The first manifestation of Devina’s creative genius that I am to witness, in the process of interviewing her, is the application of red eye shadow on the inner edges of her eyebrows:  although only a light touch, it is enough to make a dramatic introduction – rather suitably so – alluding to one willing to push the boundaries and set trends for what will one day be a dedicated following.  She is a make-up artist for Taxi Vision and Vanity Case, Soli Philander’s  TV shows under his production company aired Nationally on Dstv channel 263.  Devina is also a stylist, couture fashion designer and party-planner.

The beautiful star and co-host of the T.V. show Taxi Vision, Rosh Wonderbra Philander for which Devina is make-up artist and at times; called upon as stylist; encourages the germination of the red-tipped eyebrow look by requesting a similar look for the show.  Trend-setter?  Definately.

Devina was born in a country called Suriname, which borders Brazil, their national language being Dutch.  This explains the fact that Devina has lived abroad in the Netherlands for many years.  Devina’s mother works in the rag trade and has been her mentor since her early youth.  As she tells me of her first collection, she takes on a serious tone:  her mother inspected each garment to ensure the output of quality as well as creative flair.  She returned to Suriname in December 2013 to do the Soldier Of Life photo-shoot, which was shot in the wilds of the small country, which is home to only 560 000 people.

Her exclusive couture collection called SOLDIER OF LIFE consists of 15 contemporary Dutch Army jackets that are redesigned with her up-beat signature.  Her archive of sketches have found their recourse; albeit a public one; in form of on the insides of the jackets.  She has enjoyed seeing this collection through to completion and her only regret is that she has to sell her pieces, as she feels they are almost a part of her.

Her plans include a second collection; skirts will be the garb focused on.  A collaboration with other creative minds to host an expo is in the pipeline a she wants Soldier of Life fans to feel the authenticity of her work.  She believes that once one can comprehend her passion for her clothes and “feel the love in this plastic world that’s empty and like fiction”.

Through her clothes she wants to communicate the aftertaste of a party; nostalgia and the light that one holds in one’s hands after connecting with people and living a fabulous life.
